June 7, 1923 - June 27, 2018

Virginia Pearl (Chappell) Matthews, age 95, passed away peacefully June 27, 2018. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 30th at Sunray Baptist Church in Sunray, Texas, with Kent Canada, family friend, officiating. Burial will follow in Lane Memorial Cemetery in Sunray, with arrangements by Morrison Funeral Directors.

Virginia was born June 7, 1923 to Charles Bradley and Attie Pearl (Smith) Chappell in Crosbyton, Texas. She was raised in Crosbyton and attended Crosbyton schools. She married J.D. "Jack" Matthews on August 16, 1941, in Crosbyton. After Jack finished his service in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, they moved to Sunray. She and Jack raised four children, while Jack farmed and Virginia supported Jack's farming endeavors by cooking meals and feeding the farm crews. Her family always came first. Her desire to take care of her family kept her busy from sunrise to past sunset. She never complained, and gave of herself freely. She sacrificed her own wants and needs, but it was a selfless devotion and she felt it was her calling to care for her family. She loved being a supportive wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her home was so welcoming that no one ever knocked before coming in. She and Jack enjoyed visits from friends and family anytime, under any circumstances. Their grandchildren and great-grandchildren loved spending time there. Her wit and charm were expressed in a kind, quiet way, and she always made people smile. She was an excellent cook, and was famous for her fried chicken and coconut cream pies. Virginia was also active in Sunray Baptist Church and led the church's bereavement group in its efforts to provide meals and support to grieving families. She and Jack moved to North Richland Hills in April, 2006.

Virginia and Jack were married 67 years when Jack passed away in 2008. Virginia was also preceded in death by sisters Renda Uilkie, Frances Davis, Dorothy Lee, Billie Moyers, and brother Brad Chappell, and son-in-law Alton Stewart.

She is survived by children Marion Gale Stewart and husband Don Burkett of Sunray, Judy Greer and husband Max, of North Richland Hills, Bonnie Blackburn of Sunray, and Randy Matthews and wife Melissa, of Plano. Survivors also include six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Family visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 29th 2018 at Morrison Funeral Chapel in Sunray.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Meals on Wheels, 310 E 1st St, Dumas TX 79029.
