STRATHAM -- State Rep. Walter D. Ruffner, 77, of Benjamin Road, died July 8, 2004, at Exeter Hospital after a sudden illness. He was born Jan. 20, 1927, in Los Angeles, Calif., the son of Walter D. and Freda (Rayner) Ruffner.
Mr. Ruffner was graduated from the University of California at Long Beach with a degree in education. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He taught and was a pioneer in special education for Garden Grove School in Garden Grove, Calif., for 30 years. He also was district longshoreman for International Longshoreman's Warehouse Union, Long Beach, Calif., for many years. While in California he was a member of Local PMA Union for 32 years, as well as the Long Beach Yacht Club, Long Beach Ski Club and National Ski Patrol.
Mr. Ruffner had resided in Stratham for 20 years. At the time of his death, he was serving his third term as state representative for District 83.
He was the voice of Stratham Fair as announcer, was a communicant of St. Michael Church, Exeter, and a friend of Stratham Memorial Library.
The family includes his wife of 56 years, Velda A. (Suggs) Ruffner of Stratham; two sons, Patrick and Michael; two daughters, Pati and RoseMary; nine grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
SERVICES: Friends may call at Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter, Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael Church, corner of Front and Lincoln streets, Exeter, Thursday at 10 a.m. Burial will be private.
