James Edwin "Jim" Pumphrey, 78, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at his rural Ardmore residence. A Celebration of Life service will be Saturday, June 30, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. in the Centennial Chapel of Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home and Crematory, conducted by Phillip Fortenberry.

Born to the late Ray E. and Melba Fay (Harman) Pumphrey, April 30, 1940 at Phoenix, Arizona, Jim grew up in Phoenix and graduated from Phoenix High School, the class of 1958. He then attended the Texas Technological College, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture.

Jim and Madonna Louise Eskew were married August 30, 1974, and this year would have celebrated their forty-fourth wedding anniversary.

Jim is survived by his wife, Madonna; a daughter, Kay Lynn O'Linn and husband, Master Chief Tim O'Linn, granddaughter, Riley Skye O'Lynn of Adell, Georgia; his brother, Jay Roy Pumphrey and wife, Cynthia; sisters, Jan Mims and husband, Jacob, Jo Karr-Tedder and husband Steve; half brother and sister, David and Sandy Stanley; numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim served in the U. S. Army from 1963 to 1965 with the Military Police. An expert with the rifle and marksman with the piston he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, and was honorably discharged.

Returning to the agricultural field, Jim worked with the Tyler Packing Company, Tyler, Texas for 8 years where he was rated "Tops" in the knowledge and handling of livestock. In 1970 Jim moved to Australia working with Philip Gibson PTY, Limited. There he assisted with the stock management of 18 cattle properties and established the first feedlot in Australia. From Australia Jim moved to Ardmore and became associated with the Noble Foundation as a Livestock Specialist, retiring after 25 years of service.

Jim always had a keen interest in firearms and in 1995 began the Oklahoma Firearms Training Center. He taught concealed carry classes, was a CLEET certified SDA instructor, an OSBI approved firearms instructor, Oklahoma Wildlife Department certified hunter safety course instructor, and was a 4-H rifle instructor. Jim was also a National Rifle Association firearms instructor for pistol, rifle, shotgun, home safety, personal protection and "Refuse To Be A Victim" instructor. At the Southern Oklahoma Sportsman's Club he was the rifle and was currently the youth instructor. In competition Jim was a certified Master with the high powered rifle and small bore rifle.
