The communities of East Gwillimbury and Newmarket are shocked and saddened after learning the body of Holland Landing native Ethan Stokes was discovered in the Scugog River in Lindsay Tuesday.
Stokes, a 20-year-old Fleming College student, was found after an exhaustive two-day search of the area.
OPP divers assisted Kawartha Lakes Police in searching an area of the river where a hole in the ice had been found.
Stokes’ body was located around 1 p.m.; about 40 minutes after divers entered the water. Police say foul play is not suspected, but the investigation is continuing into circumstances that led to him being on the ice after celebrating his birthday at an area pub.
There was an immediate outpouring of shock and dismay from Ethan’s Holland Landing friends on social media.
