She grew up on their farm in Wausaukee on Perch Lake Road. As a child Mary loved to play in the woods in Louie's brush, the night pasture, the lake pasture, and down by the creek, always with our dog Shep tagging along to protect us, as Ma used to say. We would invent our own games to play using our imagination. Mary always said she had a great childhood, and wouldn't change it for anything.
We may not have had a lot of material things, but we had the songbirds in the trees, the animals in the woods, the butterflies, the rainbows, the dreams in our hearts, and each other. What more could a kid want.
Mary graduated from Wausaukee High School in 1969 as Co-Valedictorian. After High School she moved to Madison, WI for a short time, and then to Milwaukee, WI to work, and where she met Jerry Unger.
Mary and Jerry later married on February 28, 1971. Besides their common jobs they also had a tree service, and Mary often used the chainsaw helping Jerry.
Mary loved to garden, or as she put it, to put her hands in the dirt and plant, and then watch things grow. Besides vegetables she grew beautiful flowers. She had Ma's green thumb. She loved the smell of lilacs and roses, and her favorite, the wild arbutus Ma and Dad would send her in the spring. Mary was also a great cook; her Slavanian apple potica was as close as you could get to Ma's.
One of Mary's dreams was to come back to Wausaukee away from city life, and after 47 plus years she and Jerry retired about a year and a half ago, and bought a home on Jermac Road. She was so happy to be home again, to go for walks, to watch the songbirds sing in the trees, to see the deer in the fields, the peacefulness of sitting on her front porch, to explore like we did as children. Unfortunately life isn't always fair, and Mary was diagnosed with bone cancer, only getting to enjoy her dream for that year and a half.
