Obituary for Mary Huskins
Mary Washburn Huskins, age 89, of Dula Road in Spruce Pine slipped peacefully away to her heavenly home on Sunday, June 24, 2018 at Brian Center Health & Rehab in Spruce Pine after a long illness. She had been a patient at the Brian Center for thirteen years.

Born in Mitchell County as the eldest of nine children on June 20, 1929 to Henry and Nettie Carpenter Washburn, Mary grew up helping with her younger brothers and sisters which helped develop her interest in nursing. At a very young age, she contacted polio which left her right side weak to unusable. Being of a determined nature and strong will, she found the means to live and flourish despite this disability. She graduated from Harris High School and went on to study nursing at the Crossnore School. She became a nurse and worked alongside Dr. Sloop at the Crossnore Hospital until she changed her practice to Spruce Pine to begin working for Dr. Jack Horner in 1953.

To be a nurse means to embody compassion and ministering to others needs, while instilling hope and comfort even in those moments when there seems to be little of either. Mary’s patients loved her for this reason and children in particular would often refuse to have shots unless Mary administered them. She lived her professional life as a nurse until Dr. Horner’s retirement. In her personal life, she was known as daughter, sister, and wife. In 1951, she married Harold Huskins and they enjoyed a happy life together until Harold’s death in 2003. While she had no children of her own, she considered her nieces and nephews her children. She enjoyed spending time with them, telling stories that were often about Morris her cat, berry picking, and her younger life.

Mary enjoyed reading her Bible, doing crafts of any kind, and cultivating her flowers. She was a long time member of the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church where she served as church secretary for many years. She kept an unwavering faith throughout her life.

Family members who preceded Mary in death are her husband, Harold Huskins; her father and mother; Henry and Nettie Carpenter Washburn; her sister; Elva Elliott; and her brother; James Washburn.

Left to cherish her memories are sisters; Juanita McNeill of Erwin, TN; Betty Jarrett of Spartanburg, SC; Joan Hall and husband, James of Vancouver, WA; Rachel Green and husband, Johnny and Kimesia Burleson and husband, J.C. of Spruce Pine; and her brother; John Washburn and wife, Bertha of Spruce Pine. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews who will carry her memories with them.

The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence at the funeral service honoring the life of Mary Huskins on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at 5:00 pm at the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with Doug Willis, Rev. Clay Dale and Dr. Darrin Waldroup officiating. A time to support the family, share memories and receive friends will be on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 from 4:00 pm until 5:00 pm at the church. Interment will follow in the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
