Mike Vaughan of Otis, Oregon signed up to join the Army before he'd even graduated from Taft High School in Lincoln City. Two months after his 2004 graduation, he shipped out to boot camp. While on leave in March 2007, he bought an ATV and talked about a future in law enforcement. He wanted to go to Virginia Tech. While he was home he spent time with his school friend, Jesse. The pair rode motorcycles, hung out and talked, all the normal things young men their age do. He was outgoing and a fun person to be around. Even though he didn't want to return to Iraq, he knew he had a job to do and was proud to serve. He wanted to join the Army to follow in his father's footsteps who served in Desert Storm. Mike was one of nine paratroopers with the 82nd Airborne Division killed by a suicide truck bomber in Iraq at age 20. His mother, Debra Vaughan died in September 2008.
