Esbern Hanson, Grayling's oldest pioneer passed away Sunday afternoon, May 10, 1970, at Mercy Hospital.
Mr Hanson was born in Grayling October 7 1880, the son of the late Rasmus and Margrethe Hanson, and had spent his entire life here.
Funeral services were held Wendnesday, May 13 at the Sorenson Funeral Home at 2 p.m. with Pastor Robert Haskell officiating. Burial was at the Hanson family mausoleum at Elwood Cemetery here.
He was married Sept. 21, 1910 to Lillian Marie Schaefer of Pittsburgh, Pa., who survives him, as well as one son, Esbern Hanson, Jr of Bay City.
During his younger years, Mr. Hanson held several positions with the Salling-Hanson Co., in the lumbering business, between here and Johannesburg. He helped grade a railroad and helped build a bridge over the Ausable River when he was 19 years old.
He held the position of general manager of the S-H Mills and Box Co., and the R. Hanson & Sons Mill where the golf club is now.
During his life time he was a director in the following companies: Salling-Hanson, R. Hanson & Sons, Hanson Land & Lumber Co., Diamond Lumber Co., at Green Bay, Wis., Kerry and Hanson Co., Second National Bank & Trust Co., Saginaw Leonard Refineries at Alma.
At one time he was president of the Grayling State Bank, vice president of McClanahan Oil Co., vice-pres., North Michigan Land & Oil Co., and president of the St. Helen Shooting Club.
He was also a partner in a hardware busines with T.P. Peterson and Fred Welsh here.
He was the benefactor of the property where the American Legion Bowling Alley, the City Hall and State Highway Dept are now located.
Mr. Hanson was a member of the Grayling Masoic Lodge, No 356. He received his Master Mason degre in 1901, received his life membership in 1941 and was presented a 60 year pin in 1962.
Pallbearers were Jack Alef, Melvin Nielson, Bill Kraus, Bill Joseph, John Ludeman, Bill Tufts, George Griffith and Claude Sloan.
Honorary pallbearers were Dr. R.A. VanVleck, T.P. Peterson, Fred Welsh Sr., Dr. B.E. Henig, Dr. Vernon Blaha, Benjamin Jerome Sr., Paul Mayfield, Holger "Dad" Hanson and Carl W. Johnson.
