Lt. General Robert Sink was the first commanding officer of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, this earned the 506th the nickname the five-oh-Sink. He was a close personal friend to Company Commander Major Richard Winters.

He made two jumps in command of the 506th, one during D-Day, and the other during Operation: Market Garden.

He was considered one of the four percent of the Army's qualified Master parachutists, and made jumps every year on his birthday, he was also known for being the only flag rank officer to jump with his men during training.

He was portrayed by Vietnam veteran Captain Dale Dye in the HBO miniseries "Band of Brothers."
The character of "Colonel Robert Stout," which was played by Elliot Gould in the movie "A Bridge Too Far" was based on Col. Sink.
