Los Angeles civic leader John Mack died late Thursday night at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He was 81. Mack was born on January 6, 1937 in Kingstree, South Carolina, to Abram Mack, a Methodist minister, and Ruth Juanita, a school teacher. Mack and his parents then moved to Darlington, South Carolina. He attended North Carolina A&T State University, where he was the president of the NAACP chapter. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1958. He subsequently earned a master's degree from Clark Atlanta University. John Mack was an American activist in the civil rights movement. He was the executive director of the National Urban League chapter in Flint Michigan in 1964-1969. He served as the president of its Los Angeles chapter from 1969 to 2005, and as the president of the board of police commissioners of the Los Angeles Police Department from 2005 to 2013. He was predeceased by his wife Harriett Johnson in 2016. His three children Anthony Brian (Teresa), Deborah Rebecca and Andria J Mack survive him.
