ARCHER William Wharton Archer Jr. of Richmond, oldest living alumnus of Virginia Military Institute, died May 8, 2000 in Norfolk. He was born in Richmond on June 13, 1902 and was the son of Rosalie Harrison Pleasants and William Wharton Archer. He attended Chamberlayne School, later renamed St. Christopher's, and graduated in 1922 from Virginia Military Institute. In 1927, he married Mary Ann Lindsay from Portsmouth, who died in 1997. He is survived by his son, William Wharton Archer III andhis wife, Alicia of Charles City; his daughter, Mollie Archer Payne and her husband, John of Norfolk; five grandchildren, Guy Harrington Archer, Lindsay Pleasants Archer, George Harrison Payne, William Wharton Archer Payne, Adair Archer Payne McGiffin and her husband, Terry; and one great-grandson, John Bishop McGiffin. Mr. Archer began his engineering career with Virginia Electric and Power Company, building the generating plant on 12th Street. This was interrupted by World War II, in which heserved as a Major during the Invasion of Normandy, then through France and Germany to victory. Mr. Archer returned to Richmond, working and retiring from various businesses up until he was 87 years old. A graveside service will be conducted at HollywoodCemetery on Thursday, May 11, 2000 at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Richmond, or Virginia Military Institute.
