Joe Wayne Cunningham, age 92, of Conover, NC formerly of Martinsville, IL passed away Thursday, June 21, 2018 at Abernethy Laurels in Newton, NC. He was born October 5, 1925 in Martinsville, IL, the son of the late Golden Cola Cunningham and Lula Secrest Cunningham.
Joe was a WWII US Navy veteran, having served on the USS Sandoval in the Pacific. He was a recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (2 stars) and the WWII Victory Medal. Joe retired from Stearns Roger in Denver, CO.
Joe is survived by his son, Scott David Cunningham, of Englewood, CO; and his daughter, Julie Brown, and husband, David, of Conover. NC. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Coons Cunningham; brother, Ward Cunningham; and sisters, Beth McGowan and Rogene Frezza.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at Ridgelawn Cemetery, Martinsville, IL with Pastor David Wilson officiating.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 7, 2018 in the Spirit Place of Abernethy Laurels in Newton, NC with Reverend Jerry Andersan and Chaplain Susan Roddey officiating.
