Benedict Crowell was the son of William and Mary Crowell. He earned his PHD from Yale University in 1891. Crowell married Julia Cobb December of 1904. He was a prominent Cleveland business man, civic leader, Brigadier General of Ordnance U.S. Army; Assistant Secretary of War and Director of Munitions during the First World War. After the war he wrote "America's Munitions 1917-1918" published in 1919. This book was a report about on America's war production during World War I.
During World War II he became a special consultant to the Secretary of War.
