Mary was the first child of John Washington Whisman and Ann Margaret "King" Whisman. She traveled the Oregon/California Trail from Missouri to the Santa Clara area in 1846 with her parents and two siblings, Julia Ann and Alameda Nancy. She married James Columbus Braly on April 23, 1856 in Santa Clara County, California. Mary and James had eight children: Clark, Addison, Susan, Mary, Carrie Lee, John Claude, James Douglas, and Margaret G.
