Alfred Jones was born in Codsall, Staffordshire, England, the second child and oldest son of Thomas Jones, a gardener, of Codsall and his wife Anne Roberts Jones, originally from Burlton, Shropshire. His mother died when he was five years old in 1867, leaving him, his father and two sisters (Jessie and Amy) and a brother (Edgar). He married Annie Gibbons, daughter of Edward and Mary Willington Gibbons at St. Mark's Church in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire on 5 Mar 1893. Their first five children, were born in England: Eleanor, Alfred Edgar, Minnie, Thomas, Jessie, Ernest. Daughter Eleanor ("Nell") was born in Wolverhampton, before the family moved to Birmingham between 1894 and 1895. The family lived in the area around Chequers Walk and Bath Row, where Alfred worked for the nearby Anchor Tube Company as a warehouse man. One daughter, Minnie (1898-1899), died in Birmingham. The family left from Liverpool, arriving in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 11 Nov 1907, bound for the Cleveland area where Annie Jones' sister and brother had moved years previous. They settled in Chagrin Falls, Ohio and rented a home in an area fondly remembered by their descendants as "Whitesburg", where Alfred worked for the Adams Bag Company. Their last two children, Harold and Jeanette, were born in Chagrin Falls. Alfred's attendance at work was sporadic, as he would rather devote himself to his gardens. He was the grandfather of 18 and great-grandfather of many more.
