Vivian Iva Fernau, daughter of Eldred L. “Dick” and Iva V. (Luber) Fernau, was born January 18, 1925, at Butte, Nebraska.

Vivian grew up on the family farm. She attended rural School District #10, during her elementary school years. Vivian attended Butte High School graduating in 1942. Following graduation, she began a twenty year career teaching at rural schools in Boyd and Holt counties. Shortly after her high school graduation, Vivian met the love of her life, Wayne Kinzie.

Vivian and Wayne were married on September 26, 1945, at Butte Community Bible Church while Wayne was on leave from the Navy during World War II. They celebrated 71 years of marriage. During her early married years, Vivian managed to be a teacher, homemaker, and mother. Wayne and Vivian raised four sons, Gary, Terry, Randy, and Craig. Vivian also completed her teaching degree at Wayne State College.

In the early 1960’s, Vivian began a new career as a social worker with Nebraska Department of Social Services. She worked mainly with elderly and disabled clients at the Boyd County courthouse and in later years in O’Neill when the Butte and O’Neill offices merged. Vivian retired in 1990.

Vivian and Wayne remained very active during their retirement years. They purchased a home in Clearwater, Florida and spent many winters enjoying the warm weather. They also enjoyed gardening, fishing, and traveling. Vivian participated in activities at Community Bible Church and Boyd County Senior Center. She was always ready for a good game of cards.

Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are going to miss her special buttermilk pancakes very much. Vivian was a very caring person and often volunteered helping neighbors, friends, and at Butte Healthcare Center.
