DECATUR — On Sunday, June 17, 2018 at Decatur General Hospital, Virginia Ruth McDaniel traded life for eternal life. She was born in Toney, Alabama, on June 14, 1924, the only child of Ross Leatherwood and Ozella Fowler.

Her family moved to Somerville where she attended St. John’s church school. Subsequently, she graduated from Morgan County Training School in 1945. She met and married the late Reverend Cleo McDaniel Sr. in 1945 and to the union seven children were born. She accepted Christ at an early and joined the St. John Missionary Baptist Church of Somerville, and later joined the Westside Missionary Baptist Church. Mother McDaniel remained a faithful member of Westside until her death.

Mrs. McDaniel was employed by Decatur General Hospital and Roger’s Department Store in the Decatur Mall until her retirement. She remained active in her retirement years serving as the senior worker for Community Action until her health began to decline.

Virginia Ruth was predeceased by her parents; two sons, Billy Ray McDaniel and James Wallace McDaniel and a devoted cousin, Josephine Davis.

She is survived by three sons, Cleo Jr. (Phyllis), Alvin and Melvin Sr., all of Decatur; two daughters, Ruthie Dian King (Rev. Dr. William C. King, Jr.) of Youngstown, Ohio, Debbie Elaine McDaniel of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Mom is blessed to leave behind 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind devoted cousins, Betty Jackson of Decatur and A.C. Allen of Akron, Ohio and a host of other relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Westside M.B. Church with the Reverend Leo Owens officiating. Inhumation will follow in Decatur City Cemetery. The body will lie in repose one hour prior to the funeral. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Reynolds Funeral Home.
