Born Dec. 17, 1944, in Yancey County, he was the son of the late Joe McCracken and Mary Ballew McCracken Lail.
A member of Liberty Baptist Church, Billy was a very hard worker, working at Century Chair furniture until his retirement and in the evenings with his friend Roy Whisnant in heating and air.
His hobby was tractors. He and Roy loved driving their tractors, owning 14 together. They loved driving them in parades and volunteering their time and tractors for hayrides and vacation Bible schools at churches.
He loved his family dearly and took great joy in his grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, June 23, at Liberty Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gene Gouge officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 to 2:30 p.m., prior to the service.
