son of Orlo H & Blanche (Bailey) Higgins
---------------------
Harold B. Higgins, 96, passed away on Monday, June 11, 2018, at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Born on February 8, 1922, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Harold was the son of Orlo and Blanche Bailey Higgins.

Harold moved with his parents to New York in 1936.

He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1943 with a B.A. degree; from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1944 with a B.S. degree; and from the University of Chicago in 1947 with an M.B.A. degree.

Harold had an amazing professional life filled with many charitable activities.

From 1944-46 he worked for the Department of Defense in Chicago, and was involved with the Manhattan Project. In 1947 he began working for Standard Oil in Chicago as supervisor of Long Range Planning and Corporate Strategy. In 1960, he moved to Columbus, when he was hired as Vice President of Irwin Management Company (the financial management company of the Irwin Miller family).

In 1979 he went to work for Cummins Engine Company where he served as Vice President of Human Resources.

Harold left Cummins in 1987 to form his own consulting/recruiting company, Higgins Associates, but continued consulting for Cummins until 1990.

Harold’s charitable activities included serving as: Treasurer of the Irwin-Sweeney-Miller Foundation (1960-1979); Director of the Christian Foundation; Trustee for Emma Willard School in Albany, NY (1968-1978); Trustee for Christian Theological Seminary (1976- 1988); Trustee for Butler University (1984-1991); served on the Board of Ohio Wesleyan University and the Mayo Clinic; and was professional consultant to Yale University’s Capital Fund Drive.

Harold and his wife, Miriam, were members of the Disciples of Christ and attended the North Christian Church while they were in Columbus.

To keep physically fit, Harold would run along country roads and shout at the cornfields — he even did this on his 75th birthday.

Harold was a master recruiter during his tenure at Irwin Management Company and Cummins. He had the ability to see the positive traits and possibilities of the people he recruited, including several future Cummins executives.

He was extremely organized and analytical. When Harold retired, he and Miriam moved to a warmer climate in Tuscan, Arizona.

He married Miriam E. Jones on July 1, 1945. She preceded him in death in 2009.

Also preceding him were his parents.

Survivors include his loving children, Mark (Emmy) Higgins of Cincinnati, Ohio, Miriam A. Higgins of Rochester, Minnesota, and Scott (Becky) Higgins of Bloomington, Indiana. He also leaves behind his two loving granddaughters, Ida Hattemer-Higgins and Cintli Sanchez.

A private family burial will be held at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of South Central Indiana, 2626 E. 17th Sreet, Columbus, IN 47201; or to the contributors charity of choice.
