Lee Mitchell
July 21, 1960 - April 27, 2018

Lee Alan Mitchell was born on 07/21/1960 at O’Neill NE to Kenneth Charles Mitchell and Nancy Lee (Cuatt) Mitchell.

He joined sister Sandra Jean who was three. They lived on two different places when Lee was quite small milking cows and Ken working for other farmers and ranchers in the area.

After the death of Lee’s Grandpa Cuatt, the family moved up on the Niobrara River west of the Spencer Dam. Lee grew up working in the hayfield, milking cows, helping take care of livestock, and most of all making memories that he loved to share with his own family.

Lee’s love of the outdoors started at an early age and continued all through his adult life. His love of fishing at the river and farm ponds during the summer, and ice fishing in the winter was well documented in the many pictures of his growing years. This was seconded by his love of hunting deer in the fall. Lee could remember where he shot most of his deer and would even point out the exact location and recounting to his own family what took place that day. He also hunted geese, ducks, raccoons, and antelope with his dad and said those were some of his most memorable times growing up.

Lee attended country school until the second half of his first grade year. Lee then attended Spencer Public School graduating in 1978. Here he was an active member of the FFA and enjoyed taking part in work study opportunities where he could weld. After graduation Lee attended Northeast Community College in Norfolk, NE and earned his degree in Auto Mechanics. After college Lee returned to the family farm and ran his own mechanic shop business and helped with the haying and the livestock.

It was during his senior year of high school when he met the love of his life, Jody. They dated for five years and were married on October 2, 1982. To this union a son, Cory Lee, and daughter Kari Jo were born.

In the fall of 1984 Lee took a job with National Farms and moved his family north of the Atkinson/Stuart Airport. Lee started out the harvest season by running combines and planting corn in the spring. During the summer he ran up to 15 irrigation systems at a time. When National Farms discontinued the large farm operations, Lee was employed by a local farming operation for 5 years before putting his welding talent to work at Olson Industries. There was nothing he couldn’t weld. In 1995 Lee started working for Holt County Road Department working road construction driving gravel truck and drove many miles plowing snow in the winter. He continued this until the time of his illness. As Lee began treatment he was frequently asked what he did for work and he would proudly answer “I have over 1 million miles in a gravel truck…and never left the county!”

Lee’s kids were his pride and joy. He mentored Cory and Kari in 4-H shooting sports. He was a club leader, an instructor, and the kids’ cheerleader. It was rare for Lee to miss any event his children were involved in. In the event he couldn’t attend away games, he stayed up with the porch light on waiting to hear how everything went. Lee was also very supportive to all of Cory and Kari’s friends and young people in the community and became “Papa Lee” to many.

Lee had a passion in pulling antique tractors and was a member of Borderline Tractor Pulling Club. He enjoyed working on the tractors as much as pulling. His pulling took the family throughout Nebraska, Kansas, and South Dakota. He was always trying to recruit new pullers. He loved talking tractors. He grew up on Olivers but enjoyed pulling John Deere’s as well as Oliver tractors. It just had to be green.

How do you summarize 57 years in a sentence? He’s waiting at heavens door with the light on.
