Wallace (Wally) Tyler Hill, age 95, died at the Collier Hospice Center in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, on Friday, June 15, 2018.

Wally was born November 9, 1922 in Ashtabula, Ohio. As a youth, he was in the Boy Scouts where he received his Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow. While in the Boy Scouts, he acquired a pen pal from Denmark. They were pen pals for their entire lives.

Wally was in the Merchant Marines where he worked on the ore boats on Lake Erie. At age 21, he joined the Marine Corps as a radio technician, and was among the first wave of Marines to land on Iwo Jima beach in the historic World War II battle. He also served on the Marshall Islands and Saipan.

He met his wife, Jean Marilyn Noble (deceased in 2011), while in the Marines. They married in 1947. He attended college in Nebraska and Ohio and became an electrical engineer. He enjoyed being a ham operator as well.

Wally worked for AT & T Bell Laboratories in New Jersey and was then transferred to Colorado in 1969. He volunteered at the Northglenn Police Department for 20 years where he started out as McGruff the drug dog. He was also active in the Masons, Shriners and Scottish Rite for many years.

The family would like to thank the staff at Keystone at Legacy Ridge where Wally lived for 8 years. A special thanks to the Collier Hospice Center for the excellent care given at the end of his life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in Wally’s name.
