Maria (went by Mary) Hartmann is strongly believed (though it has not been proven conclusively) to be eldest of nine known children of Johann (John) Peter (went by Peter) Hartman (1772-1848) and Phillipina Mock Hartman (1786-1854), who married in c1804 in North Carolina. Mary married the widower cabinet maker, Jesse Clodfelter (1804-1870) on 13 Jul 1830 in North Carolina. Jesse had no children by his first wife. Mary and Jesse lived in the vincinity of the Moravian community of Friedberg, then on the border of Stokes and Davidson now Forsyth and Davidson) Counties, North Carolina. Jesse and Mary were the parents of seven children, six boys and one girl. Five of the seven children grew to maturity. Six and one-half months after Mary died Jesse married for a third time to Anna Rosina Fishel (1817-1881) on 04 Nov 1845 at Davidson County, North Carolina. Jesse and Anna had an additional ten children. In c1848 Jesse, his third wife, and the five living children from his marriage to Mary moved to the Moravian community of West Salem, Edwards County, Illinois.
