At the time of his death Jason Boggus was in Trinidad working for the Trinidad Lake Asphalt Company. In 1933, his widow, Esther Wolfe Boggus, wrote a letter to Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, asking for her assistance into looking into the death of Jason Boggus. She wrote that she had traveled to Trinidad and Venezuela, and had obtained sworn statements and proof that he had met his death through violent causes, not by what was stated on the consulor report. The First Lady seems to have inquired into the death, as there were various reports pertaining to the matter.

For whatever reason, Jason Carter Boggus, who by all accounts was fit on one day, was a "raving maniac" the next, died in what his widow thought suspicious circumstances.
