It looks like the tombstone says 1904, but his Texas death certificate says 1905.

John was born in Ohio. He married Mary Ann Momenteller before 1850 in Carroll Co, Ohio.
In 1850 they were in Brown twp, Carroll Co, Oh.
Can't find them on the 1860 census, but their son E. Lincoln was born about 1861 in Ohio.

By 1870 they were in Fayette Co, IL, PO Shobonier, near Mary Ann's sister and family, Lucetta and John Lindesmith.
It's interesting that John Lindesmith said he shook hands with Stephen Douglas and voted for him in the 1860 election, but John Downs named a son "Lincoln" in 1861, and so probably voted for Lincoln in the 1860 election.

In 1880 they were still in Fayette Co, IL. However, John and Lucetta had died in 1878, so the Downs family moved sometime after this to Texas. They were living in Galveston County, Texas in the 1900 census.

They would have been there and lived through the 1900 hurricane. In 1900 the population of Galveston was 37,789. The cat. 4 hurricane that destroyed Galveston on Sept 8, 1900 was the nation's deadliest natural disaster, claiming upwards of 8,000 lives on Galveston Island and on the mainland (estimates range from 6,000 to 12,000 killed). It appears that no one in the Downs family died in that hurricane.

John was buried in Alta Loma Cem, Sante Fe, Tx in 1905. This was about 12 miles inland from Galveston. Mary Ann died in 1908 in Galveston and must surely be buried beside him. Son, Lloyd was still in Galveston in 1910. Lloyd was buried in the same cemetery as his father in 1924.
