Dr. James Joseph "Jim" Staudenmeier, 85, of Conyngham, passed away Nov. 6, 2017, in his home.

Beloved husband to Dorothy Bernotas since Thanksgiving Day of Nov. 23, 1961, he was born in Ashland to the late Judge Charles and Sara Staudenmeier.

A graduate of Ashland High School, Class of 1950, he furthered his education receiving a B.S. from Mount St. Mary's University, Emmitsburg, Md., majoring in economics and minors in English and philosophy in 1954. While at the Mount, he was student body president, received the Flanagan award and initiated the school's diving program. Following in his father's and brother's footsteps, Jim attended Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, from 1954 through 1957, pursuing a law degree. In 1959, he completed secondary school teacher certification at Bloomsburg State University. An M.S. from Bucknell University included majors in guidance and counseling and education supervision and administration. He received a Doctorate of Education in 1965 from Penn State University with a major in counselor education and a minor in psychology.

A lifelong student and educator, Jim was the first director of guidance in the Minersville Area Joint School District from 1960-63. Jim retired from Penn State University on Jan. 31, 1996, after 30 years, culminating in campus executive officer at Penn State Hazleton.

Selfless service to the community included being member and president of the Conyngham Borough Council, Conyngham Valley Educational Advisory Board, director of the Hazleton Chapter of the American Cancer Society, member of the board of directors of Hazleton General Hospital, the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce, the board of directors at MMI Preparatory School and CAN DO board member.

Jim served in the Army Reserves and Pennsylvania and New York Army National Guard for six years.

In his retirement, Jim and Dorothy traveled to several countries. Jim cherished time spent at home with family.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Sara "Sally" Margraf.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are son, retired Col. James J. Staudenmeier Jr., MD (Bobbie Jo), Clarksville, Tenn.; daughters, Robin Ann Pottorff (Brian), Marysville, Laura M. Hall (J. Brian), Pittsburgh, and Sara Jean Moses (William J.), Zion Grove; sister, Margaret Whalen, Downingtown; brother, Attorney Charles W. Staudenmeier Jr., Hershey; brother-in-law, Donald C. Margraf, Lower Macungie Township; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Veteran's Day, Nov. 11, 2017, at St. John Bosco R.C. Church, Route 93, Sugarloaf. Arrangements were handled by Moran Funeral Home Inc. To honor Jim's strong Roman Catholic faith, private burial was celebrated on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Dec. 8, 2017. A Penn State Hazleton scholarship in Jim's honor has been established. Donations may be sent to Penn State Hazleton, 76 University Drive, Hazleton, PA 18202.
