Ada Marr Vineyard was given to us for 95 years to love and to be loved. She was peacefully taken home to reunite with her beloved daughter and husband on Saturday, June 16, 2018.

Ada was born Ada Elizabeth to Lily Inez and James B. Barnett on April 19, 1923, in Denton, Texas. As a young girl her family moved from Denton to Van Alstyne, Texas, where she met and married the love of her life Herman (Tubby) Marr on October 19, 1937. After several years of marriage, she and Tubby moved to Sherman and both were blessed with a daughter and a son. Ada was always active in her children’s activities both in and out of school. She was a part of her daughter’s school life, always sewing outfits for her and her friends or for school events. Ada enjoyed being around Pat’s friends and has continued to keep in touch with many of them today. As well, she never missed any of Reggie’s ballgames, be it baseball or football or any type of event in which he might have shown interest. Her children were her joy.

Ada began her career at Levine’s Department Store and J.C. Penney in downtown Sherman working in the men’s department. She eventually moved to the new Sears working in the men’s department where she kept all the local men exceptionally dressed from head to toe. It was when she transferred into the home decorating department that her passion was unleashed. She worked at Sears until her retirement becoming well known for her interior decorating designs.

After retirement, Ada volunteered as a pink lady at Wilson N Jones Hospital donating over 11,000 hours. For much of this time, she designed floral arrangements to sell at the gift shop or to display throughout the hospital. Many are still seen at the hospital today. Her most memorable occasions were in 1993, when she placed her new great-grandbaby in a Christmas Stocking made by the pink ladies and in 2000, watching her grandson being awarded a college scholarship from the pink ladies auxiliary.

Ada was a master seamstress, a gifted floral designer, an elegant interior designer and magnificent cook. (Her Christmas candy was like none other!) She also had the best investigative skills, far better than the FBI. She could drag the truth out of anyone, even if they weren’t trying to hide it. Her intent was wanting to be well informed with the person to whom she was speaking. Above all, she was the best mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, auntie and friend. We shall all miss her presence and her stories. She embraced everyone she met with a warm smile and open heart.

After the loss of her husband, Tubby in 1980, Ada met and married Walter Vineyard in 1983. They were both active members of Fairview Baptist Church during their 33-year marriage until Ada fell ill seven years ago. Walter was faithful to care and look after her until he no longer could. They were married until he preceded her in death in August 2016. Ada could’t live at home following his death, so she moved and became a resident of the Renaissance in Sherman, but continued to keep her home so she could continue to enjoy her memories.

Also preceding her in death was her beloved daughter, Patricia Marr Stevens, her brothers, Martin, Boyd, Odell and Lloyd Ray Barnett, her sisters Opal Rush, Diola Bell, Earline Nichols, Jo Helen Whitfill and a great-great granddaughter Kaley Brook Lansdell.

She leaves behind her son Reggie Marr and his wife Barbara of Pottsboro, TX, grandchildren Tammy Golden (Robert) of Ft. Worth, TX, Josh Marr (Jennifer White) of Denison, TX, Micci Marshall (Jason) of Omaha NE, Toby Schnitker (Krista) of Van Alstyne TX, 8 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services are scheduled at Fairview Baptist Church in Sherman on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at 1:00 PM. Family visitation will be Tuesday, June 19, 2018, from 6:00 and 8:00 PM at Waldo’s Funeral Home, and other times at the home.
