Mrs. Newton served as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and Mary Washington Hospital Auxiliary for many years. She was a longtime faithful and active member of New Hope United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her two daughters, Faye Hicks (Bill) and Irene Steele; son Russell Newton; grandchildren Sarah Alley, Jason Steele and Connor Steele; and one great-granddaughter Taryn Alley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward L. “Sam” Newton; father Russell A. Chewning Jr.; mother Myrtle Silver Chewning; brother Clyde Chewning; and sister Virginia Marlowe.
A service will be held at noon on Tuesday, June 19 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
