Ronald was the son of Mrs Halcyon Q. Fero and the late Glen Fero of Scotia New York; he was the dear father of daughters Pamela, Laurie and Wendy Fero in care of their guardian in Lompoc California; and the brother Richard Fero, Tampa Florida. Warrant Officer Fero graduated from Scotia High School and was a Veteran of over 14 years of Military Service. Before his last enlistment in the US Army in 1963, he had served eight years in the US Air Force and had been associated with the Scotia National Guard unit while employed at the J.J. Burhmaster Co. Inc.

He arrived in Vietnam for duty on September 10, 1965 where he was assigned to and served with the 220th Aviation Company (Recon), 14th Aviation Battalion, 17th Aviation Group, USARV.

On December 20, a mid air collision occurred when the O-1A Bird Dog piloted by WO Fero was struck by a Royal Vietnamese Air Force Douglas Skyraider over Nha Trang Airfield in Khanh Hoa Province. Warrant Officer Fero and his passenger PFC Marvin Leroy Shipmen were both killed.
