Grew up in Thomasville, NC, working as a shoemaker when the War Between the States erupted. Enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1862, serving until the war's end in 1865. Spent most of his military service along the coastal defenses around Wilmington, NC, as part of the 10th NC Heavy Artillery. Surrendered as part of Joseph Johnston's Confederate Army in April, 1865 while in Greensboro, NC. Eventually moved to High Point, actively supporting Confederate Veterans organizations until his death in 1916 at the age of 75. Wounded at the battle of Bentonville, NC in March of 1865. Buried beside his wife, Susan Jenny Allred Blair, who died in 1908.
