Melvin D. “Mel” Taylor, 68, of Moline, passed away Wednesday June 13, 2018 at his home.

Funeral services are 10AM Thursday June 21, 2018 at the Van Hoe Funeral Home, Ltd., in East Moline. Visitation will be held from 4-7PM Wednesday June 20, 2018 at the funeral home where a rosary will be recited at 3PM and memorials may be made to Honor Flight of the Quad Cities. Interment will be the Rock Island National Cemetery with full military rites.

Mel was born October 20, 1949 in Moline, a son of Clarence and Esther (Witt) Taylor. He graduated from United Township High School, class of 1967, and was drafted in the U.S. Army. He served his country proudly in Vietnam for 14 months and continued his military service serving in the Army and Navy Reserves for over 20 years. He married Virginia Zmuda, April 10, 1971 in Rock Island and 10 years later, were proud to renew their vows at St. Mary's Catholic Church in East Moline.

Melvin was a Machinist with the Rock Island Arsenal for 38 years until retiring in 2012. He then worked as a Ticket Taker Supervisor at the Mark of the Quad-Cities for 10 years. On 2 separate occasions he was sent as a government employee to Iraq to install armored plating on combat vehicles. He was currently employed as a bus driver for the United Township School District.

He loved his grandkids, enjoyed cars; especially his 1967 Pontiac Firebird convertible, traveling and spending time with his wife in their motorhome, and yardwork.

Survivors include: his wife, Ginny, 2 sons: Christopher (Jessica) Taylor of Brea, CA and Craig (Laura) Taylor of Greenville, IN; 4 grandchildren: Jack, Ellie, Jake and Lydia; a brother: Jack (Pat) Taylor of Port Byron; 3 sisters: Donna Mooney of TN, Joan (George) Shafer of AZ, and Melanie Horton of Arizona; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister: Dorothy, and 2 brothers: Dick and Bob.
