Johnny Lee Bates, Sr., 64, died October 30, 2016. Johnny accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age. He worked many years in the Water Department for the City of West Helena, Arkansas. He later worked several more years for the Memphis Housing Authority where he later retired. Johnny was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife Bertha Lee Petties Newby Bates, by his stepdaughters Brenda Ann Newby and Arthur Mae Newby, and his stepson Arthur Lee Newby, Sr. He leaves to cherish his memory, his mother Josie Mae Mann of Omaha, NE; three sisters: Mamie and Mary of Flint, MI and Kimberly Mann McMorris of Omaha, NE; three brothers: Ezell of Nashville, TN; Sammie Bates of Omaha, NE; and William Mann of Italy; his son Johnny Lee Bates, Jr., stepdaughters Voner Ford of West Helena, AR; Bertha Newby Watson of Chicago, IL; Josephine McGhee of Tunica, MS; Genevieve Thomas (Cass) of Bartlett, TN; Jennette Newby of Memphis, TN; 26 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
