John's mother, Elizabeth Chambers, died of typhus fever, leaving her husband,Joshua, with three small children. In 1849, when John was 16, he and his brother, Henry, their stepmother, and two young children came to the US. John was a conductor on the Underground Railroad. He served in the 11th Regiment, U.S. Calvary Co. He married Mary Dibble and came to Kansas earlier to join the Bible and Rifle Colony.
