SALEM — Gary Swartz McAllister, 73, of Valley Street, Salem, died at Heartland of Clarksburg early Thursday morning, December 8, 2005.

He was born July 14, 1932, in Pine Grove, WV, the son of the late John Paul and Lois Pauline Swartz McAllister.

On December 1, 1956, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Jo Ryan, who preceded him in death on November 1, 2005.

He was also preceded in death by his son, Matthew Glen McAllister, and one sister, Sandra McAllister Beard.

Surviving are two sons, Michael and wife Vanessa McAllister of Hampshire County, WV, and their children, Kinsey, Hailey and Corbin McAllister; Paul and wife Kim McAllister of Jarvisville Road and their children, Ryan, Allison and Abbigail McAllister; one daughter, Beth Morgan of Vienna, WV, and her daughter, Madison Morgan.

He was a graduate of Pine Grove High School. He earned a B.S. degree in 1954 in biological science and physical education from Salem College. He later earned his master's degree from West Virginia University in curriculum and instruction, and holds certificates in advanced study through the National Science Foundation from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, the University of Vermont, the College of William and Mary, and West Virginia University.

He spent 10 years as a classroom teacher in Wetzel and Harrison counties. He retired in 2001 from Salem International University as Professor Emeritus in Education after 37 years of service.

Gary was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Salem Rifle and Pistol Club and a former member of the Salem Lodge No. 84, A.F. & A.M.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Saturday, December 10, at the Greathouse Funeral Home in Salem. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 11, at 2:30 p.m., with the Rev. Jon Hayes presiding. Interment will follow in the K of P Cemetery, Salem.
