Business woman. She was the widow of Sam Walton, the founder of the Wal-Mart empire. Not only was she Sam's wife, but she was also his advisor. Mrs. Walton was a philanthropist. She devoted much of her time helping others and to improving quality of life in northwest Arkansas. Once considered the richest woman in the world, her net worth at the time of her death was approximately $16.4 billion making her the world's 29th richest person on Forbes most recent rankings. It was her wish that her estate be left to the Walton Family Foundation. The foundation, overseen by her children and advisers, is a big backer of public school reforms, including charter schools and private-school vouchers. Helen was the valedictorian of her high school class in Claremore, Oklahoma and a graduate of the University of Oklahoma at Norman with a degree in business. She is the daughter of L.S. and Hazel Carr Robson. Her father was a prosperous banker and rancher. She met her future husband in 1942 at a bowling alley, and they were married on Feb. 14, 1943, her husband. Sam passed away in 1992. Mrs. Walton passed away due to natural causes.
