Robert Thompson Hogue, 101, formerly of Eskridge, passed away Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Rolling Hills Care Center in Topeka. Robert was born February 10, 1917 in rural Eskridge, the son of Harry and Eva Thompson Hogue. He attended Eskridge Rural High School and graduated with the Class of 1935. As a young man he worked with his parents on the family farm four miles south of Eskridge. Robert’s life would forever change on January 24, 1946, the day he married the love of his life Margaret Cathryn Ross. They would begin their marriage living on a farm across the road from his childhood home. They would eventually occupy his parent’s farm before moving into Eskridge in 1960. Robert owned and operated Hogue Farm Service for over ten years before taking a position with the City of Eskridge. His main duties were the Gas and Water Department, however his talents as an all around “Mr. Fix It” expanded his duties to cover anything within the City of Eskridge. Robert and Margaret moved into the retirement apartments in Eskridge where he managed and maintained the property. His overwhelming sense of community was expressed in his willingness to help his fellow residents with their day to day needs. He would frequently be seen bringing their mail and running errands for them around town. He was always the first one out when it snowed, making sure the seniors had access to the Senior Citizen’s Center in the downtown area. Robert was a member of Kiwanis, and he and Margaret worshiped together at the Eskridge Presbyterian Church. He was an active member in the National Pencil Collectors Society and encouraged his family and friends to participate by bringing him pencils from their travels. Robert and Margaret moved to Topeka in 2010 to be nearer medical care for Margaret. Her wellbeing and happiness was his sole concern throughout their 68 years together. Sadly she would precede him in death on August 31, 2013. He will live on in the hearts of his daughters, Joyce, Gaylene and Della; his sons, Marlow and Dudley; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends. Robert was preceded in death by a grandson, Robert Carey-Hogue; a great-great- granddaughter, Kira Kailihiwa; a sister, Verna Hatfield and two brothers, Boyd and Howard Hogue. Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, June 15, 2018 at the United Church of Eskridge. Burial will follow services at Eskridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
