Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company E, 3rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on May 28, 1861, and served in the First Bull Run and Peninsular Campaigns with his unit. Promoted to Captain and commander his company on August 13, 1862 to replace Captain Edward L. Campbell, who was advanced to Major of the 3rd New Jersey, he commanded the company in the Battles of South Mountain, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. On December 28, 1863 he was transferred to the newly recruited 3rd New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry and was appointed its Major. He fought with his cavalry unit during the Overland Battles of Wilderness and Spotsylvania, and in the siege of Petersburg, Virginia. He was then promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on September 23, 1864 to replace Lieutenant Colonel Charles C. Sudyam, who resigned. For much of the time after his promotion he commanded the regiment while its Colonel, Alexander C.M. Pennington, commanded the unit's brigade, rendering outstanding service at the Battle of Five Forks. He was present with his unit at the Army of Northern Virginia's surrender at Appomattox. Brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on April 1, 1865 "for gallant and meritorious services in the Battles of Five Forks and Southside Railroad., Va." His Civil War service ended over year after the final surrender of Confederate troops when he was finally mustered out on August 1, 1866.
