Sarah was married previously to Joseph Platt Mitchell (1835-1864) on November 15, 1860 in St. Joseph County, Indiana. They had two children together: Ida May and Andrew Jackson Joseph Mitchell. Joseph died during a battle in the Civil War while he was fighting for the Union Army in Georgia.
Sarah married her second husband, Joseph D. Shaw (1840-1903), on November 24, 1864 in Elkhart County, Indiana. They had at least two children together: Sylvester and Lodema Catherine Shaw. They were divorced by 1872.
