Janice Faye Rowe peacefully entered eternal life at 2:58PM on May 19, 2018 at her residence in Goodyear, Arizona. During her glorious 81 years with us Janice inspired and blessed those around her and made educating youth her life’s work. She was known to her mother as ‘Janice’, to her children as ‘Mom’, to her students as ‘Mrs. Rowe’ and to her siblings and colleagues as ‘Jan’.
Born in Taylor, Texas to George and Mae Selleh, Janice spent the years of her youth in the friendly arms of the rural Texas town and neighboring communities. After moving to Tempe, Arizona in 1953, Janice graduated from Tempe High School and chose the University of Arizona as her higher learning choice to pursue a degree in English with a minor in Theater Arts.
Greatly influenced at the University of Arizona by ‘The First Lady Of American Educational Theater’, Dr. Fairfax Proudfit Walkup, Janice graduated from the University of Arizona in 1958, taking her first job teaching English at Glendale Union High School in Glendale, Arizona. In 1959 Janice met James Westcott Rowe, the love of her life, and the two were married in 1960, moving shortly thereafter to Fort Dix, New Jersey for James’ work in the U.S. Army Reserve during the Vietnam era. Janice served as a military spouse and substitute teacher during those Fort Dix years, ending in 1965 with James’ honorable discharge from the Army and a new life in Riverside, California where Janice taught English and Theater Arts at Central Junior High School. A move to the Bay Area in May 1968, led to Janice teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) for four years to international students from all continents at South San Francisco Junior College. Janice returned to Arizona with an English teaching position in 1972 at the newly built Thunderbird High School, eventually becoming principal of the school in 1989 after years serving as a vice principal at Independence High School and as Curriculum & Instruction Division Coordinator for the Glendale Union High School District.
Janice later earned a Masters in Secondary Education from Northern Arizona University and retired from the Glendale Union High School District as Associate Superintendent of Curriculum in May of 2000, the same month her first and only grandchild, Chase Westcott Rowe, was born.
Janice will be lovingly remembered by her husband, James Westcott Rowe, her children Shelley Krusic and Bret Rowe and their spouses Ivan Krusic and Peggy Rowe; sisters Karen Hood, Sharen Drews and Kathy Caplinger; grandson Chase Rowe; nieces Tammy Drews, Melissa Hood, Susan Rowe, Kelly Ann Falch and Jessica Selleh; and, nephews Shawn Hood, Louis Drews, Jr., Marc Pappalardo, Kyle Caplinger, Scott Selleh, Michael Rowe, Stephen Rowe, Jeremy Falch and Ryan Falch.
