Joseph Gibson Mann of Newcastle and two other soldiers lost their lives in an air raid on the hillside near the railwaystation at Åndalsnes on May 1st 1940.

They were found by Norwegian soldiers after the Germans had occupied Åndalsnes and brought to the church at Hen. The three were buried in a collective grave on 6 May 1940.

All available evidence suggests that the other two also were Green Howards; Serjeant Robert Hall of Houghton le Spring and John Long of Dewsbury.
