Charles Gene Brittain, 82, of Vale, passed away Monday, June 11, 2018 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.

Born January 29, 1936 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Carl Monroe Brittain and Clara Belle Rhoney Brittain.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Joyce Scronce Brittain; and a brother, Darrell Brittain.

A member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Vale, Gene served for many years as the church treasurer and volunteered with the church’s mission building teams.

He was the owner of Mtn. View Hardware for over 44 years, with his brother Darrell, where he enjoyed helping his customers and was quoted as saying, “If you can’t find it, I’ll find it for you.” He was a member of the Lion’s Club in Longview, Masons, and served on the board of the Cooksville Fire Department. He enjoyed gardening and had a large family garden but his main joy was spending time with his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughters: Denise Brittain Rudisill and husband Billy of Vale, Sandra Renae Brittain of Vale; brother, Harold Donald Brittain and wife Judy of Hickory; sister, Colleen Brittain Warlick of Hickory; sister-in-law, Ann Brittain of Newton; grandchildren: Jason Rudisill and wife Cameron of Lancaster, SC, Allen Rudisill and wife Katie of Vale, Shane Rudisill and wife Sarah of Newton; great-grandchildren: Aidan and Ava Rudisill, both of Lancaster, SC, Alexis Rudisill of Vale, and Maddie and Emily Rudisill, both of Newton.

The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6 - 8:00 p.m. at Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tony Sayer and the Rev. Olin Isenhour officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Brittain will make a stop at 12:30 p.m. at Mtn. View Hardware and will then lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.
