Originally from the Scottish Highlands, he first resided in Westmoreland County, Virginia (according to his grandson's death certificate) before settling in Amherst County, Virginia. He received a Land Grant of nineteen acres on 7th October 1796 on the north side of the north folk of the Buffalo River and a Land Grant of 100 acres on both sides of the North Fork of the Buffalo River on 27th September 1797. I have read (but I do not know how true it is) that he never wore pants until he came to Virginia. His wife may have been a Miss Anderson, born in Ireland (of Scottish or Scottish & English ancestry). He departed this life before 1810.
