Born in Chalybeate Springs, NC, she was daughter of Evander and Maggie Johnson, the youngest of eight children. She attended Lafayette School where she was a standout basketball player and Campbell Junior College studying business. Prior to marriage she worked at the Harnett County ASCS Office. She married Eldon F. Sloan, Sr. on June 16, 1945. She was a quick wit and talented artist. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, and friend to many. She was a dedicated servant and faithful member of Antioch Baptist Church working with youth ministry, children’s ministry, WMU, choir, and Wednesday Night Meal Team as well as a member of the Antioch Happy Travelers seniors ministry.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eldon F. Sloan, Sr. and their youngest daughter, Cynthia Carol Sloan; also her siblings: Melissa Mae Odum, Clio Johnson, McRay Johnson, Beatrice Connor, Mary Spence, Roger Johnson, Gilmore Johnson.
She leaves behind her children: son, Dr. Eldon F. Sloan, Jr. and his wife Betsy of Broadway, NC; son, Ronald Sloan and his wife Susan of Four Oaks, NC; daughter, Elaine Sloan LeTrent of Lillington, NC; and daughter, Marilyn Sloan Freebersyser and her husband, George, of Fuquay Varina, NC.
Grandchildren: Dr. Don Sloan and his wife, Dr. Jes; Rebecca Sloan Lindhout and her husband, Gavin; David Sloan and his wife, Laura; Elizabeth Sloan Boyd and her husband, Craig; Melissa Sloan Eakin and her husband, Jordan; Nathan Sloan and his wife, Emily; Stephen LeTrent and his wife, Kathryn; Jennifer LeTrent Parrish; Virginia LeTrent Adams and her husband, David; and Anna Grace Freebersyser.
Great Grandchildren: Samantha, Micah, and Caius Sloan; Jozie and Phoebe Lindhout; Coraline and Gwendolyn Excelle Sloan; Ryan, Amelia, and Jacob Boyd; Eva and Jude LeTrent; Allie Parrish.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 10, 4:00 pm at Antioch Baptist Church, 6670 Old U.S. 421, Lillington, NC. Visitation, in the church sanctuary, will be from 2:00-3:45 pm. Graveside service in the church cemetery.
