Men’s Basketball to Commemorate Paul Davidson During 2018-19 Campaign

The Malone University men's basketball team will open up its 2018-19 season this Friday and Saturday as the squad takes part in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference / Great Lakes Valley Conference Crossover Tournament at the University of Illinois Springfield.
As the Pioneers embark on their fourth season under the direction of head coach Casey Kaufman, the team will need to adapt to the graduation of a talented group of seniors that helped the 2017-18 squad register a 19-10 overall record and make the program's second straight appearance at the G-MAC Postseason Tournament. ...Another key component that will be missing from the Osborne Hall stands, just behind the Pioneer bench, is the presence of Paul Davidson, a Malone graduate, former Malone professor and longtime fan of the Pioneer men's basketball program. After a lengthy health battle, Paul went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ this past June. And although he will not physically be with the team moving forward, his love, support and influence will leave a lasting impact on Malone's coaches and players.

"For a long time, Paul has been a huge part of Malone men's basketball, going back to Coach Hal Smith and Coach Tim Walker and during my time here as well." commented Kaufman. "We talk to our guys a lot about living selflessly and being givers – nobody embodied that more than Paul Davidson."

Malone will wear a special patch on its jerseys this year to honor the man who meant so much to those wearing the Pioneer uniforms and those who coached the team.

"The type of concern that Paul showed for our guys is part of what makes being a player at Malone special," said Kaufman. "Paul was often at our practices, team dinners, banquets and games and he was the ultimate encourager to our staff and team. On a personal note, after every game since I'd been at Malone, I always had a voicemail from Paul. If it was after a loss, he would offer some type of encouragement. If it was after a win, it was pure elation. The time he spent with me and our players was very special. He has been missed, but his example carries on."
