Joe Bloys Medley, 75, passed away peacefully Friday evening, June 8, 2018 at his residence in Clifton. Funeral arrangements are pending at Clifton Funeral Home in Clifton.

Born in El Paso County, Texas on July 28, 1942, Joe was the son of Wilbur Bion and Mary Isabelle (Bloys) Medley. He grew up in the Big Bend area, mostly Alpine and Ft. Davis, where he graduated from high school. While playing 6-man football for Ft. Davis in a game against Valentine, he met his future wife, Linda Gravell, who was a cheerleader for Valentine. The couple were married on July 24, 1966 in Mexico. They enjoyed almost 35 years together until her passing on March 9, 2001.

After health prevented Joe from enlisting for military service, he decided to serve his country in law enforcement and became a constable for Brewster County for a number of years. He was also a true cowboy, working on ranches, breaking horses and tending to cattle. Later after moving to Pecos, he also worked as a heavy equipment operator. First and foremost though, he was a cowboy.

He loved to watch westerns, especially those with John Wayne. Always at home in the mountains, he often noted that he felt most at peace and closest to God when out by himself on horseback in the mountains. He was a talented artist, both at drawing and wood carving, but taking the grandkids and great-grandkids fishing was his favorite activity. Most of all, Joe loved his family and his God. He was of the Presbyterian faith.

Also preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, George Medley. He is survived by four children, Melissa Meyer of Clifton, Latisha Draughon and husband, Brad, of Charlotte, Sherry Brookshire and husband, Scott, of Vancouver, WA and Roy Medley of Flower Mound. Also surviving are two brothers, Benjamin Medley and wife, Kim, of Weatherford and Oscar Medley and wife, Barbara, of Ft. Davis; 5 grandchildren, Lindsey Lee, Sgt. Cody J. Wise, Kirsten Diaz and husband, Leo, Garrett Roberts and wife, Kathryne, and Courtney Roberts; and 3 great-grandchildren, Brendin, Levi and Emily; and very special companion, Betty Sansom, of Uvalde.

Obituary published online 9 Jun 2018 by Clifton Funeral Home, Clifton, Texas.

NOTE: Mr. Medley is buried is what is considered “New” Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery, 1700 W. Main St., Uvalde, Texas. (Beside wife, Linda)
