Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Sharp passed into rest on the morning of November 9, after almost a century of life. She was the daughter of John Lapsley Armstrong and Alabama McAfee and was born December 21, 1833, on the same farm on the Cummin's Ferry road where she had lived and died. Five generations had lived on this place, which was a land grant to her great-grandfather, Capt. John Armstrong, from Virginia in 1780, the grant being signed by Benjamin Harrison, the second governor of Virginia.
Mrs. Sharp was a remarkable woman, of wonderful personality and fine intellect. She retained her faculties to a marvelous degree, and before she became so frail from advancing years, she loved to recount the historic events taking place during her long life. She was a veritable storehouse of knowledge of the changes in this community from almost its early settlement. She was of Scotch ancestry and the blood of six notable pioneer families in Kentucky flowed in her veins.
In November 5, 1857, she was married to William Henry Sharp who died many years ago. Six of their eight children survive: William A. Sharp, of Frankfort; Miss Jenny Sharp, McAfee; Thomas Cleland Sharp, Portland, Oregon; C. Bryson Sharp, and Abe E. Sharp of McAfee. She also leaves nineteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Her funeral Tuesday afternoon was at Providence church, of which she was a member of 83 years, conducted by her pastor, the Rev. W. A. Stephenson. Burial was in Providence cemetery. The casket bearers were Judge Ben C. Allin, John Armstrong, Abe Sharp, Joe McCoun, Tomer T. Lyen, and John Dunn. Out-of-town people attending the funeral were: A. A. Sharp, Thomas Sharp, Homer Reay, Louisville; Mrs. W. A. Sharp, Miss Annie Sharp, Mrs. R. O. Armstrong, Frankfort; Jack A. Sharp, Cincinnati; Mr. and Mrs. Nolan Morgan, of Lexington.
R. O. Armstrong and son, Willie, Frankfort; Mrs. B. F. Russell, Chicago; Mrs. D. A. McAfee and daughter, Mrs. Add McMeekin, Shelbyville; Henry McAfee, Homer Ray and Frances Sharp, Louisville; Harry McAfee, Lawrenceburg.
