Joan was born to William Edward "Ted" Maize and Adeline Alice Hutton Maize in Newton, KS. She was adopted by her maternal aunt, Mabel Hazel Hutton Wasson and uncle, James Willard Wasson. She was about 13 years old at the time of the adoption, although she went to live with them much earlier. James worked for the Frisco Railroad. Ted and Adeline moved to California. Joan married Lowell Howard Straughn in Joplin, MO, where she was living at the time of the marriage. They had five sons, Steven L., Dennis R., James H., Neal E. and Michael A. Straughn. Lowell preceded Joan in death. At the time of her death, she resided in Olathe, Kansas. She died at KU Medical Center with pancreatic cancer.
