Glennis Geneva Douglass, 98, Converse, passed away at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, 2007 at her residence.

She was born near Converse on October 16, 1908 to Merle and Bessie (Overman) Powell. On April 30, 1931, she married Bernard Douglass, who preceded her in death on May 27, 1978.

Her long life began in the final stages of the pioneer period and she witnessed the greatest changes of any era of time.

The 1925 Converse High School graduate also earned degrees from Ball State University and Indiana Wesleyan University. Douglass retired from the Oak Hill School Corporation, where she was an elementary school teacher for 25 years. She also taught in the Jackson and Union Township schools in Howard County for three years. Douglass was a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, as well as the Miami County Retired Teachers Association.

Since retiring, Douglass has appeared in costume, entertaining many grade school children in her log cabin, telling them stories of pioneer times.

Douglass was a life member of the Amboy Friends Church, having served as librarian for 20 years, historian, monthly meeting clerk, and many years of teaching Sunday School classes. In 1952, she was a delegate to the Friends' World Conference in Oxford, England. While there, she made a study of the English school system through Indiana University.

Other activities include being a Past Regent of the General Francis Marion Chapter of the D.A.R., and during her years of membership, she was a five-time delegate to the National Continental Congress in Washington, D.C.

Douglass also was a member of the Indiana Historical Society, a 50-year member of the Jackson Homemakers Club, Tri Arts Club, Colonial Dames XVII Century, Magna Carta Dames, and the Americans of Royal Descent.

Douglass is survived by one daughter, Nancy Boyer and husband Craig, Converse; three grandchildren, John Boyer and wife Carole, Converse, Sue Dulmes and husband Robert, Kokomo, and Mark Boyer and wife Rachel, Amboy; three sisters, Jeanette McKeefer, Converse, Elizabeth Bunner, New Castle, and Martha Grace Hahn and husband Ivan, Peru; one brother, Ronald Powell and wife Barbara, Converse; seven great-grandchildren, Matthew, Nathan, Abbie and Samuel Boyer, Christina Wyrick and husband Geoffrey, Andrew and Melissa Dulmes; and one great-great grandson, Lance Wyrick.

Aside from her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

A service celebrating the life of Glennis G. Douglass will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Amboy Friends Church, with Pastors Richard Martens and Robert Morris officiating.

Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery, Amboy.
