Don Hillin Nelson, a former resident of Pampa, Texas passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2017 in Austin, Texas after a lengthy illness. He was 82 years of age.

Don was born in Pampa in 1934 to Laura (Hillin) and Jerry Nelson. He attended Pampa schools, earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master’s Degree from West Texas State University in Canyon. He started his career in Education with the Pampa Independent School District, taught several years in El Paso, Texas, worked with a Job Corp program in Indiahoma, Oklahoma, and returned to the Pampa ISD where he worked until he retired in 1990. He relocated to Austin, Texas, where he was employed by the IRS until his second retirement in 2002.

During his time in Pampa, he was active with Rotary International, participating in study groups traveling to Chile and Australia, hosted foreign students, and was named a Paul Harris Fellow for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations between peoples of the world. He enjoyed the many friendships he developed and was an enthusiastic host when visitors arrived. He was kind, thoughtful and generous with his time and resources. During the months of his final illness, he frequently expressed his appreciation for the help of caregivers and his gratitude for the company of visitors.

He is survived by two sons, Philip of Austin and Peter of Kansas City, Missouri, and a granddaughter Cierra of Kansas City. Additionally, Don is survived by two sisters, Betty of Austin and Molly Cazee (Dale) of Oklahoma City, OK; two nieces, Patricia Bradley (Phillip) of Indianola, OK and Gina Boling (Tom) of Edmond, OK along with grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.

Don is preceded in death by his parents, one niece and one nephew, a grand niece and a grand nephew.

A memorial service and commitment of his cremated remains will take place at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, October 7, 2017 in St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 727 West Browning, Pampa. Don’s family extends an invitation to his friends and former associates to attend the service and the reception to follow in the Parish Hall of St. Matthews.
