US Congressman. He graduated from Cumberland University, Tennessee, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in 1876. From 1882 to 1884, he was the superintendent of public instruction for Perry County. In 1897, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-fifth and to the eleven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1921. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and business pursuits in Lexington, Tennessee. He retired in 1930 and moved to Washington, D.C. where remained until his death.
