“Ann” Gertrude Mayhew Vaughn, age 90, passed peacefully on June 1, 2018, in Stuart, Virginia. Ann is survived by her daughter, Nancy Vaughn and a son-in-law David Gempel of Florida; a sister, Lucille Thompson of Roanoke, Virginia, as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews. Ann has recently been lovingly cared for by niece and nephew, Trish and Bobby Hylton at their home in Stuart and at the Blue Ridge Therapy Center where Trish is employed. She was born and grew up in Moneta, Virginia and is preceded in death by her parents, Myrtle and Harry Mayhew; four sisters, Frances Howell, Clarene Wilson, Dorothy Hylton, Phyllis Scott and two brothers, Boyd and Wallace Mayhew.

Ann moved to “the big city” of Martinsville and worked for DuPont Company for twenty years. She was a member of McCabe Memorial Baptist Church. Ann and her daughter moved to West Palm Beach, Florida where Ann owned and operated several successful restaurants and a commercial property maintenance company. She returned to Virginia several years ago to care for friends and family. She had many hobbies; she loved to play golf, dance, garden and laugh. She made friends wherever she went. She spent her last few years growing vegetables and flowers, making others laugh with stories of her long and eventful life. She will be missed by all the lives and hearts she touched. Generous and free-spirited to the end, Ann donated her body to the Virginia Anatomical Society.

A memorial and celebration of life will be held Saturday, June 23, 2018, at New Beginnings Baptist Church in Patrick Springs. In lieu of flowers it was Ann’s wish that in addition to loving your friends and family every day, individuals donate to your favorite charity or cause.
